restaurants

1800

With a devoted following, this upmarket restaurant traces its roots by capturing the restoration of a magnificent old captain’s house. Following a quick tour of the ornate furnishings in the mansion, head up to the rooftop garden for a magnificent view and creative Greek dishes with a skilful twist. The wine list is extensive and together with the excellent food, you will be sure to dine graciously.

Ambrosia

Take a seat at a candlelit table on the terrace at Ambrosia and you’ll think you’re in heaven. It is easily one of the most romantic restaurants in the world, where you can lose yourself in the idyllic view of the Santorini caldera and the Aegean Sea. It serves excellent contemporary Greek cuisine and the food is among the most adventurous on the island. The sister restaurant, Ambrosia & Nectar, is more casual but also worth visiting.

Katina

Those looking for a more relaxed experience with loads of atmosphere should go to Katina, an outdoor taverna on the Bay of Ammoudi which sits below Oia. At this tiny fishing village you can handpick your octopus, sea bass and lobster straight out of the sea and it is priced by the kilo. This is raw authenticity at its best and is truly a charming spot on the Oia wharf at sunset. If you do not pre-arrange transport, the way back up to Oia is via the 300 stairs or alternatively, on the back of a donkey.

Saltsa

If you can survive a moment away from the caldera view, retreat to the relaxed and sumptuous Saltsa restaurant, slightly out of the centre of Fira town. The outdoor dining area is rustic chic with a mismatched boho feel. The major attraction is the exquisite food crafted by the talented local chef, who only uses fresh ingredients of the Santorinian land and sea.

Selene

Selene is one of the most famous restaurants in Fira, admired by its followers for its romantic flair and breathtaking view of the caldera cliff. Local produce features prominently on the menu, manifesting in creative Greek cuisine, including dishes such as seafood baklava or baked mackerel with caper leaves and tomato wrapped in a fava crepe. With a large indoor dining room and several levels of interconnected open air terraces, Selene can accommodate 350 Hellenic hedonists.

what we think

You would be forgiven for thinking that the picture-perfect snaps of Santorini splashed across every travel magazine were fake. The juxtaposition of the electric blue ocean against the white-washed villages built into a cascading cliff can be surreal. But do not be fooled, the photos are real. In Santorini, you wish you had a photographic memory to store the images of heaven. If your idea of the perfect holiday spot is to bask in the sublime sunshine, take a dip in the infinity pool, watch the most perfect sunset and enjoy tantalizing local seafood “al fresco”, then Santorini should be at the top of your list. This is one dream you won’t want to wake up from.
